WASHINGTON, D.C.-Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida) today released the following statement in response to the House passage of a $10.5 billion emergency supplemental spending bill to provide disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina:
"First and foremost, I want to express my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, who lost their lives, their homes and their livelihoods. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this time. In the wake of this horrific natural disaster, we must act quickly to bring relief to the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, and Congress has promptly responded with the emergency supplemental bill to provide federal aid. These funds will go to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Defense so that they will have the necessary means to recover and rebuild. The swift action by Congress in passing this spending bill is a clear sign that the federal government will work to meet the critical needs of the citizens along the Gulf Coast.
"While we are devastated by this tragedy, our faith and determination will ensure that we will rebuild and we will endure. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the tremendous damages caused by hurricanes, I urge my fellow Americans to come together to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina across the southeast-every little bit helps. Please do not hesitate to contact my office for information about relief efforts and providing assistance. I am confident the American spirit of generosity will be evident in the coming days and weeks, as communities in the afflicted areas come together and people from across the country provide assistance."
