BOYD CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY ON WAR FUNDING

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida) today joined his fellow Blue Dogs in endorsing and introducing the War Funding Accountability Act calling for more accountability from the Administration and the Pentagon for funds spent in Iraq and Afghanistan.  With the Administration's request yesterday for an additional $82 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan, Congressman Boyd recognizes that taxpayers deserve to know where the money is going and that it is being spent appropriately.

"More than a job, it our patriotic duty to ensure that our troops are getting the equipment and supplies they need to accomplish the mission and come home safely," said Congressman Boyd.  "This legislation will provide an accurate accounting method to guarantee our troops have the resources they need.  The men and women serving in combat are dedicating their lives to protecting our freedom, and we owe it to them to ensure that the funding we send to Iraq and Afghanistan is being spent in the most effective and efficient way."

The War Funding Accountability Act would ensure that troops receive the supplies and equipment they need, call on the Administration to seek additional international support, and require the administration to report to Congress on the progress being made in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Congressional Research Service estimates that the Department of Defense has received over $201 billion for combat operations, occupation and support for military personnel deployed, or supporting operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The Congressional Budget Office estimates that military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan could cost $458 billion over the next nine years, in addition to the amount already spent.

As a leader of the conservative Blue Dog Democrats, Congressman Boyd is a proponent of fiscal responsibility in Washington, D.C.
