WASHINGTON, D.C.-A leading voice on fiscal responsibility in the House of Representatives, Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida) has been named to the House Budget Committee. As a member of the House Budget Committee, Congressman Boyd will be actively involved in every aspect of the nation's fiscal policy.
"I am eager to get to work on a fiscally responsible budget for next year," said Congressman Boyd. "With record federal deficits in recent years, I understand the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in order to get our books in balance. I expect to play an integral role in restoring soundness to the federal budget and plotting a path for a brighter fiscal outlook in the future."
As the leader of the Blue Dog Coalition, Congressman Boyd has been a longtime advocate for fiscal responsibility and meaningful budget reforms. Congressman Boyd was active in the bipartisan budget plan in 1997 that produced a balanced budget four years in a row and resulted in budget surpluses in 1999 and 2000. On the House Budget Committee, Congressman Boyd will work to restore the budget enforcement tools that were in place in the 1990s, such as pay-as-you-go rules and spending caps.
"I'm delighted Allen Boyd will be joining the Budget Committee, and I look forward to working with him in tackling the tough budget challenges before us, first and foremost the huge deficit this Administration has run up," said House Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt (D-SC). "Allen will be a key player in our effort to wipe out the deficit in five years with fiscal responsibility and restraint. We will fight to ensure that Social Security is safe and sound for generations to come. And we will carry forward our fight for the good programs that millions of Americans depend on."
Congressman Boyd is a fifth generation farmer and Army veteran from Monticello, Florida, in his sixth term representing Florida's 2nd Congressional District. In addition to the House Budget Committee, Congressman Boyd will continue to serve on the House Appropriations Committee and lead the Blue Dog Coalition.
