WASHINGTON, D.C.-Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida) today announced that the Department of Homeland Security's Office of State and Local Government Coordination and Preparedness (SLGCP) will be accepting grant applications through December 14, 2005, to allocate funds to enhance our nation's homeland security. Through the Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) Program, the state of Florida has been allocated approximately $7.5 million to improve state and local emergency preparedness, response and recovery capabilities.
"This grant program is so important to our communities," said Congressman Boyd. "We must ensure that our firefighters, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel receive the resources they need to do the important work that they do. This funding will help our local and state governments have the necessary tools to respond to an emergency quickly and effectively, thereby making our communities safer."
The State Administering Agencies in Florida can apply for and distribute the allocated funds for the state of Florida through the EMPG Program. Florida's State Administering Agencies can be found at the Office of Justice Programs website. The actual grant awards will be made at a later date.
SLGCP is the federal government's lead agency responsible for preparing the nation against terrorism by assisting states and local authorities to prevent, deter and respond to terrorist acts. SLGCP provides a broad array of assistance to America's first responders through funding, coordinated training, exercises, equipment acquisition and technical assistance.
