LOS ANGELES AREA TO RECEIVE OVER $20 MILLION IN GRANTS TO INCREASE HOMELAND SECURITY

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, a member of the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Homeland Security, announced today that the Los Angeles area will receive over $20 million in grants from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to implement programs aimed at protecting the Los Angeles/Long Beach Port Complex from a terrorist attack.

"These grants provide critically needed federal funds to increase security in our region," said Roybal-Allard. "With this money, local officials can implement programs that will help safeguard our port and critical infrastructure from terrorist threats."

The DHS grants include funds for harbor patrol equipment at the Port of Los Angeles and surveillance equipment for the Port of Long Beach. In addition, funds were provided to a number of commercial technical port operators for their security needs, as well as the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority. The grant monies are from the Transportation Security Administration's Port Security Grant and Operation Safe Commerce programs.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard has used her position on the Subcommittee on Homeland Security to advocate on behalf of Los Angeles and the port complex. She recently toured the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex with Congressman Hal Rodgers, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security, and Mayor James Hahn. Their visit highlighted the port's needs and the role it plays in our nation's economy.

"The Los Angeles/Long Beach Port Complex is the nation's largest container port," said Roybal-Allard. "It connects us to the world, and provides other nations with an entry point to the Los Angeles region - one of the nation's foremost centers for commerce and trade, a magnet for tourism, and home to a dynamic and diverse population. However, the port's size and importance also make it a possible terrorist target. This funding is the first step in ensuring that the port receives sufficient federal funds to help protect the complex and our entire region."
