The US Postal Service has changed all of the City of Vernon to one zip code - 90058 - effective August 2, 2008.  Late last year, the Postal Service polled the roughly 230 businesses in the City of Vernon that had zip codes of 90023 or 90040, the majority of the resulting votes approved of the change to 90058.

The Postal Service's receptivity to this zip code adjustment appears to be the direct result of the assistance of Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard. Several times over the last decade, the City attempted to convince the U.S. Postal Service to realign the zip code boundaries, without success. Once the City informed the congresswoman of the issue, members of her staff attended meetings with the Postal Service and provided reinforcement for the need to realign the zip code boundaries.

The Postal Service has indicated that, although the change is effective August 2nd, 2008, there will be a twelve-month grace period when the old zip codes will still be accepted. As part of the change, the Postal Service will be updating its Internet based zip code look-up system (which is also used by delivery services such as UPS and FedEx) so that when you type in "90058" it is identified as the City of Vernon with Los Angeles being listed as an acceptable alternative city.
