(May 14, 2008) Washington, D.C. Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (shown second left) meets with Los Angeles representatives of the Alzheimer’s Association, including a Boyle Heights constituent, who traveled to our nation’s capital to garner support for federal Alzheimer's disease research. The advocates work in the Los Angeles to inform and educate people about Alzheimer’s disease, research opportunities, diagnosis, treatment plans and care.

“The increased prevalence of Alzheimer’s also exists in the Latino community.  Culturally sensitive services are critically important for Spanish-speaking patients and their caregivers and family members who work together to combat its ill effects.  Rep. Roybal-Allard is an essential voice on the House Appropriations Committee,” said John Trasviña, President of MALDEF, who is working closely with the Alzheimer’s Association of Southern California. Mr. Trasviña is pictured on right.

Pictured wearing the Alzheimer’s banner, Nadine Diaz, M.S.W. is a social worker and recruitment coordinator at the USC Memory and Aging Center and Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.  A proud fourth generation Boyle Heights resident and third generation USC alumna, Ms. Diaz continues to live and work in the congresswoman's district.  She has worked in medical research at USC Keck School of Medicine for the past 10 years.

The USC Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at the Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights has been a part of the Eastside community for the past 25 years.  The four components of USC’s Memory and Aging Center are located in Congresswoman Roybal-Allard's district. The USC National Institutes of Health Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center is one of the first federally-funded centers. There are two California state-funded Alzheimer’s Research and Clinical Centers – one at USC Health Sciences in Boyle Heights and the other at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey. In addition, the memory clinical care services are offered at Health Sciences Campus.

The Alzheimer’s Research and Clinical Centers offer state of the art assessments, medical evaluations, diagnosis, treatments, and clinical research opportunities. The centers’ services are available to anyone in the community, including all of the areas in the congresswoman’s 34th Congressional District. The multicultural district includes: Bell; Bellflower; Bell Gardens; Boyle Heights; Commerce; Cudahy; Downey; Downtown Los Angeles; Huntington Park; Little Tokyo; Maywood; South Park; Vernon; Walnut Park; and portions of Chinatown, East Los Angeles, Florence, Pico Union, and Westlake.

Families who lack health insurance are also accommodated and welcomed.
The USC Disease Research Center and its Research and Clinical Center are staffed by doctors, professors, nurses, and social workers who are multi-lingual and able to assist patients and their family members and caregivers of diverse cultural backgrounds.  Free transportation assistance is also available. More information is available at www.usc.edu/memory or by calling (323) 442-7600.

Mr. Peter Braun (shown on left) is President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, California Southland Chapter. For more than 25 years, the Alzheimer's Association of the California Southland has worked in partnership with a wide variety of organizations, including USC and MALDEF, to gain an understanding of the unique needs of our diverse communities and to design and deliver services that meet those needs.  The Alzheimer's Association is the national voluntary health agency dedicated to researching the prevention, cure and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders and to providing support and assistance to afflicted patients and their families.
