Be Smart
Save the Women in Your Life from Heart Disease

By Congressman Gene Green

“Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of American women? If you didn’t, you are not alone – more than 60 percent of women mistakenly believe their biggest health threat is breast cancer.  But the reality is that heart disease kills 6 times as many women as breast cancer.  That is why February 1-7 is designated as Women’s Heart Week.  Now is the time to take action and control the risk factors for heart disease.  It might save your life.

“Nearly half of the 500,000 heart attack deaths in the U.S. each year kill women.  Women between the ages of 40 and 60 are at especially high risk for heart disease, but it is important for younger women and even teenagers to learn more about this disease, since heart disease develops gradually and can start at a young age.  Heart attacks often strike without warning, so the more you know about the causes and symptoms of a heart attack, the more likely you’ll be to take the steps to save your life.

“The symptoms of a heart attack may be different for women than for men. A heart attack can mimic indigestion, panic attack or the flu, often with no chest pain at all. You may have a “funny feeling in the chest” and be short of breath. If you are having symptoms you are unsure of, call your doctor and ask for a complete risk assessment and, if indicated, testing to rule out heart disease.

“But the most important weapon in our fight against heart disease is prevention.    Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising can significantly lower your risk for heart disease.  Avoiding tobacco products is also an important way to reduce your risk.  For more information about heart disease, contact your physician, or call the American Heart Association at 1-800-242-8721.”
