Green Announces Port Security Funding

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Gene Green (D-Houston) announced that the Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Agency (TSA) awarded $13 million for enhanced port security in Houston.  This is the third round of port security funding.

Of that grant funding, $4.18 million will go to the Port of Houston Authority (PHA) for closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance at terminals as well as access controls and physical enhancements at entrances.  An additional $9.12 million in grant money will go to companies along the Houston ship channel for similar improvements to private docks and refinery areas.

“Our port and industry are the economic lifeblood of Houston, so we must secure our most valuable assets against sabotage,” Green said. “We have consistently asked TSA for Port of Houston security funding so we are pleased with today’s announcement.”

Port security grant funding, for both PHA and private facilities, are reimbursements for security enhancements already made.  Rep. Green will now concentrate on helping PHA and the Houston Ship Channel industry obtain funding from the next grant round, estimated to begin in early Spring 2004.
