Green, Tauzin Ask for DOE Study of Gas Reporting Markets

Washington, DC - Congressman Gene Green (D-TX) and House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Billy Tauzin (R-LA) sent a letter late yesterday to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Spencer Abraham asking for recommendations to streamline the information reporting in the natural gas markets.

“The energy trading marketplace is suffering from a lack of market, industry and consumer confidence because of concerns over the veracity of supply, production, and delivery information.  I believe DOE is in the best position to analyze any information reporting weaknesses with the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and suggest possible improvements,” Green said.

The natural gas trading markets rely on publicly reported gas data to predict current and future economic trends in natural gas demand.  The accuracy of this information is vital to ensuring that consumers receive the best prices from their utility provider.

“Chairman Tauzin and I believe that a detailed analysis done by DOE would again be useful in reassuring the natural gas markets that the public information they are receiving from the industry is accurate,” added Green.
