Green Supports Intelligence Legislation

Washington, DC - As the House of Representatives expects to vote on S.2845, “The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Report of 2004,” Rep. Gene Green (D-Houston) issued the following statement:

“Today Congress will take important steps to make our country a safer place, and I am proud to vote for the National Intelligence Reform Act.

“It was clear after 9/11, and from the report released by the 9/11 Commission that major changes needed to be made in the way our intelligence agencies use and share information.

“This important bill protects Americans by overhauling our intelligence agencies to allow for a more seamless flow of information.

“It makes America safer by stipulating that a single individual be responsible for coordinating our intelligence and accountable to Congress and the American people.

“This bill will improve security at our airports, on our coasts and on our land borders.

“The bill includes 40,000 more detention beds for suspected terrorists and illegal immigrants, 8,000 more border agents and 4,000 more border investigators, as well as language requiring national standards on tamper-proof drivers' licenses.

“These reforms are urgently needed.  They are supported by the 9/11 Commission, the families of the 9/11 victims, and a bipartisan majority of the House and the Senate.”
