Washington, DC - Congressman Gene Green today praised the House of Representatives for passing the Health Care Safety Net Improvement Act yesterday afternoon. The legislation will reauthorize the Consolidated Health Centers program, the National Health Services Corps, certain Rural Health Programs, and includes a five-year reauthorization for the Community Access Program (CAP), which Green has worked on for many years.
“This legislation could not come at a better time,” said Green. “More than 41 million Americans do not have health insurance and the CAP program helps many of those people receive the treatment and medical advice they need. This is especially true in Houston, where more than 9,000 people have been helped through this project just in the last year.”
The CAP program helps fill the gaps in the health care safety net by improving infrastructure and communications among agencies to ensure that care is continuous. Through federal CAP funds, the Harris County Community Access Collaborative has grown into an organization consisting of 78 members and affiliated groups working together to coordinate and improve access to health care. The Collaborative is also supporting the redesign of existing safety net services in order to assist them to use their resources more efficiently resulting in the increase of services to 18,000 to 24,000 additional people.
“With better information, agencies can provide preventive, primary, and emergency clinical health services in an integrated and coordinated manner,” said Green. “This kind of program not only helps ease some of the burdens on our health care system, but makes a tremendous difference in the quality of life for many of its patients.”
