Washington, DC - Congressman Gene Green today criticized the majority leadership in the House of representatives for their lack of action to help get the economy back on track. As a constant stream of negative economic data continues to be reported, no substantive legislation has been brought up in the House of Representatives to address the situation.
“Household income is down for the first time since 1991, poverty rates have increased for the first time since 1993, yet I continue to watch our House majority leadership bring up suspension bills to name post offices after people,” said Green. “We need to start addressing the issues that American people care about and do the work that we were elected to do.”
Recent reports have shown that 1.8 million jobs have been lost, the stock market just had its worst quarter since 1987, thousands of employees have seen their retirement savings evaporate, and what used to be a $5.6 trillion surplus is now a $2 trillion deficit.
“Congress has yet to provide pension protection, pass a Medicare prescription drug benefit that lowers the cost of drugs, protect social security from privatization, or pass the mandatory appropriations bills that fund so many programs important to the American people,” added Green.
