Congressman Green and Sallie Mae Host Financial Aid Workshop

Green: Finances should never stop one from achieving his/her dreams

Houston, TX - On Monday, February 10th, U.S. Congressman Gene Green (D-Houston), in conjunction with Sallie Mae, will host a seminar to provide students with information on how to finance their college education.  The “Paying for College Workshop” is a free interactive seminar that discusses programs and resources to help make college affordable.  The event will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Furr High School located at 520 Mercury Drive.

Financial aid advisors from Sallie Mae and the University of Houston will offer information about how to find grants, scholarships, government sponsored loans, and other free financial aid information.  In addition, Sallie Mae will be giving away one $500 scholarship to one of the attendees of the seminar. Those interested in attending may RSVP to 1-877-840-8224 or visit thesalliemaefund.org/register.

“College is expensive but dreams must not have a price tag,” Green stated.  “This seminar is intended to provide parents with information on how best to finance their child’s college education, and where they can apply for scholarships and grants.”

According to a study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 1998, the median salary for those who earned a high school diploma was $25,062, while holders of a bachelor’s degree had a median salary of $40,387.  That is a difference of 61%.

“A college education has become vital to obtaining a job in today’s economy.  College graduates can get higher salaries than high school graduates because they have the qualifications for many of the highest-paying and fastest-growing jobs in our economy,” Green concluded.
