Green Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Washington, DC - Rep. Gene Green has joined millions of Americans commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month by praising the many contributions made by the Hispanic community to our nation. Green released the following statement:

“Over the next few weeks, we will gather to recognize and honor the Hispanic community for all their extraordinary contributions to our nation.  Through their hard work, leadership, and culture, Hispanics are an integral part of our nation.

“With an estimated population of 38.8 million, Hispanics are American’s largest and fastest growing minority community.  Nationally, Hispanics have begun to turn those numbers into political, economic and social capital. The growing Hispanic population has begun to demand real solutions to real problems and finally, American leaders are listening.

“For the first time, just a few weeks ago, Hispanics of all generations were able to listen to presidential candidates vying for the most powerful seat in our nation in both English and Spanish.  They heard candidates give their plans for the future of our nation’s education system, the alarming rate of the Hispanic uninsured and rebuilding America’s shaky economy.

“They are leaders in the small business sector. Hispanic-owned business totaled 1.2 million. Latina owned businesses are the fastest growing sector of the American economy. The Hispanic buying power is estimated at $600 billion annually, causing corporate America to listen to the needs and wants of Hispanic consumers.

“Socially, Hispanics have begun to solidify their place in American’ history books. In all areas of American life, Hispanics have played a role from the military to the lessons taught in schools.  Hispanics are the most highly decorated minority group in the U.S. military history, with 1.14 million veterans and 115,380 currently serving in the Armed Forces.  Steps to ensure the inclusion of Hispanics have been taken by federal agencies, corporate America and the arts and entertainment industry.

“Be assured, Congress is also committed to developing measures that adequately address the needs facing the Hispanic community.

“During Hispanic Heritage Month we say gracias to the Hispanic Community for its hard work and leadership in the political, economic and social arenas.  Gracias for making society better and our culture more vibrant.”
