Congressman Gene Green’s
Statements on the Debt Ceiling
Washington, DC - Congressman Gene Green released the following remarks from a floor statement given during debate on the debt ceiling increase today.

“I would vote to increase the debt ceiling, as would most of the Democratic Caucus, if it was strictly devoted to the war on terrorism and making our country safe,” said Rep. Gene Green.  “But that is not the case and that is what's so frustrating.”

“Last year when the economy was taking a downturn, we voted for one of the biggest tax cuts in history,” said Green.  “That's what's causing this debt ceiling to have to be increased, it's not the war on terrorism.”

“Instead of sneaking around to increase the debt ceiling, we should be discussing what we can do to prevent our nation from getting further in debt,” said Green.  “Our current debt inhibits us from providing a prescription drug benefit and shoring up our social security program.”
