SCOTUS RULING DOESN’T GO FAR ENOUGH:

Washington, DC - Congressman Gene Green (TX-29) commends the Supreme Courts decision today to overturn part of the Texas Congressional map, but believes the ruling did not go far enough.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision provides a victory for Hispanic voters whose voting rights were undermined by the partisan agenda of Tom DeLay, Governor Perry, Republican legislative leaders and the political appointees of the Bush Administration’s Justice Department,” said Congressman Gene Green. “All of those officials argued in support of a plan that violated Hispanic voting rights.”

“As a representative of a high minority district I believe that a ruling that is only a win for a portion of the minority vote does not go far enough,” continued Congressman Green.  “It is disappointing that the Court majority upheld other portions of the plan that disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of Texans, both African Americans and Hispanics.  The Court should have upheld citizen’s inalienable right of one person one vote and they should have upheld their right to petition their elected officials.  This was not done.”

“We call on the District Court to act immediately to adopt a remedy that restores the rights of Hispanic voters in the 2006 election,” concluded Gene Green.  “There is ample time for Texans to have their voting rights restored this year without having justice “DeLayed” for another two years.”
