Washington, D.C.—U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement today in response to President Bush’s threat to veto the Medicare bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives on June 24th by a vote of 355 to 59 and the U.S. Senate yesterday by a vote of 69 to 30. The Medicare Improvement Act enjoys veto-proof majorities in both the House and the Senate.
“Instead of accepting the will of Congress and signing this bill into the law, the President wants to continue to play political games with the health of seniors and people with disabilities. It is just a matter of time before the President is going to have to accept the veto-proof votes of the House and Senate. It’s unfortunate that this political maneuver has to come at the expense of expanding Medicare benefits and reimbursing doctors who are providing health care to people that need it the most. The President’s veto threat shows how out of touch he is with millions of seniors and people with disabilities who are struggling to get access to quality health care in this country. I urge the President to withdraw his veto threat and sign this bill into law immediately.”
