Cincinnati, OH -- Congressman Steve Chabot presented Richard and Dorothy Slaughter of Glendale with the medals they earned during their military service in World War II.

Richard Slaughter served in the 264th Engineer Combat Battalion of the U.S. Army.  He was inducted into the Army on July 30, 1943 and was discharged as a Technician 4th grade on April 13, 1946.  Mr. Slaughter was a part of the 3rd Army under General George S. Patton.  In April 1945, his unit entered the concentration camp at Ohrdruf just days after it was liberated.  The camp, located near Gotha, Germany, was the first Nazi concentration camp liberated by the U.S. Army.

Congressman Chabot presented Mr. Slaughter with the European-African-Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal with 2 bronze service stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Honorable Service Lapel Pin, and the Sharpshooter Badge with rifle bar.

Dorothy Slaughter served in the U.S. Navy, working for the Bureau of Personnel in Washington, D.C. She was discharged as a Yeoman 2nd class. At the ceremony, Mrs. Slaughter was presented with the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Honorable Service Lapel Pin, and the Navy Discharge Button.

The Slaughters met on a blind date in Cincinnati in 1946, after they had both been discharged.  

The Slaughters contacted Congressman Chabot’s office seeking assistance in obtaining the medals they earned during their military service.  Mr. Slaughter had previously received the ribbons he earned, but not the medals.  Mrs. Slaughter was never given any of the awards she earned.  Congressman Chabot’s office wrote to the National Personnel Records Center and was able to obtain the awards for the couple.
