Eliminating Wasteful Spending

Steve's View: “Lawmakers must recognize that the money we spend in Washington belongs to the taxpayers and that we have been entrusted by those we represent to make responsible decisions. That means reducing wasteful spending and cutting taxes so hardworking families can keep more of the money they earn.”

Since Congressman Chabot has been in Congress he has sponsored legislation to cut wasteful spending and balance the budget. He has earned the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” presented by the National Taxpayers Union, and has also received the “Taxpayer’s Hero Award” given out by the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW).  Chabot’s lifetime grade from CCAGW is 99 percent, the highest for any member of the House of Representatives.

Stop the Omnibus Pork (STOP) Resolution: On March 29, 2007, Congressman Chabot reintroduced the Stop the Omnibus Pork Resolution, H. Res. 283, in a bipartisan effort to eliminate wasteful spending and open the appropriations process up to further debate and review. Chabot introduced the legislation with Congressman Mark Udall (D-CO).

The Stop the Omnibus Pork (STOP) Resolution would amend House rules to prohibit the use of omnibus appropriations bills. First introduced in 1950, the Omnibus Appropriation Act was intended to be a one-time experiment aimed at streamlining the appropriations process.  Since that time, omnibus bills have grown much larger in their size, now often comprised of thousands of pages of text and hundreds of billions of dollars in spending.
