Congressman Davis Named To Influential Transportation Committee January 28, 2003

-- Amid intense competition, U.S. Congressman Lincoln Davis (TN-04) today secured a seat on the powerful Transportation and Infrastructure Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Transportation Committee has jurisdiction over civil aviation, maritime law, ground transportation, water resources development, water resources conservation and management and hazardous waste clean up.

Congressman Davis while in the Tennessee Legislature served as the Vice Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, where he helped secure funds for road projects in his district. "With a seat on the Transportation Committee I will be able to better serve the people of the 4th District by utilizing the skills, knowledge, and contacts that I've made in the state Senate."

"Roads are the lifeline of our communities and it is essential that we address the need for a program that will help make rural communities more accessible," continued Davis. "I look forward to working with my friends in state and local government to implement a long-term transportation vision that ensures that our communities are livable and that our local economy remains an economic engine for the region and the rest of the nation."

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) will chair the committee, and Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minnesota) will serve as the ranking Democratic member on the committee.

In the coming weeks and months, Davis and other members of the committee will begin work on the reauthorization of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), where Davis will work to ensure that Tennessee taxpayers receive their fair share of federal highway funding dollars. TEA-21 is the legislation that authorizes the level of federal funding for federal highway, highway safety and transit programs.
