Davis Votes to Protect the American Flag June 06, 2003

-- U.S. Rep. Lincoln Davis voted in favor of legislation that would amend the Constitution of the United States and authorize the Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.

"I supported this constitutional amendment because it guarantees this decision will not be left to the court, whose members are appointed for a lifetime," Davis said. "From my perspective, the burning of the flag should never have been integrated as a right of free speech under the 1st Amendment."

"Our flag is a symbol not only of our great nation, but of the brave men and women who fought and died to protect it. Our flag is a symbol of our values, our ideals and our very identity. To do violence to the flag is to dishonor the sacrifice of our veterans, and of those who paid the ultimate price to ensure our freedom."
