We Need Gas Price Relief: Drill Now

{insert date}
How much is too much?  I know $4 is too much to pay for a gallon of gas.  But San Francisco’s Speaker Nancy Pelosi hasn’t gotten the message.  Speaker Pelosi shut down the United States House of Representatives for a five week recess when we should be solving the energy crisis and lowering gas prices.
Last Friday, a determined group of Republican Representatives decided Speaker Pelosi could not stifle free speech in this country nor our will to do the right thing for America. Pelosi order the microphones and TV cameras shut off and the lights dimmed in an attempt to lock the doors on the energy debate. A group of 40-50 Republicans held the floor in the dim light and began to address the taxpayers and energy users who came to Washington, DC on their family trips to see their “House” in action…or inaction since the Democrats all left town.
Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats do not want to debate the energy crisis and solutions.  If forced to debate, the full light of logic will surely scorch the radical environmentalists, led by Pelosi. We need to drill here and drill now, but she doesn’t want to offend her radical environmentalist supporters and donors by doing the right thing for our economy. With no legislative action there is no help for western Iowa families this fall when they head out to a son’s football game or a daughter’s volleyball game.  There is no law to reduce the price for western Iowa farmers when they pay to fill their tanks this fall when they harvest corn and soybeans.  Filling a combine with diesel fuel costing nearly $5.00 per gallon adds to the already high costs that farmers are facing.
It isn’t just about drilling, it is about energy.  While Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats are on vacation, some western Iowa families won’t be able to afford to pay for the gas to take their own family vacation.
 Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat leadership in Congress owe too much to their friends in the radical environmental lobby.  They want us to drive less and take public transportation.  They come from cities like New York and San Francisco, not western Iowa. They don’t understand that driving is essential to functioning in Iowa and your vehicle is your freedom to make a living.  Driving less is not an option for many people in Iowa.
 Here is my energy plan:  I want to grow the size of the energy pie to lower your price at the pump.  I support oil and gas exploration here in the United States.  I want to explore in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, without disturbing the habitat.  We can drill off the coast for natural gas.  We can also produce renewable fuels like ethanol, biodiesel and wind energy to help meet demand. In fact, western Iowa has an important role to play as a renewable energy export center.  If we do these things, we can lower your price at the pump and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
 I will work for solutions and keep the energy fight going.  I challenge and urge each and every Western Iowan to call Speaker Pelosi’s office at (202)225-0100 and demand that she reconvene the House to reach solution for America’s energy crisis.
