Rep. Myrick and Senator Dole Announce $7,404,955 Homeland Security Grant For Charlotte

(Washington, D.C.) – Today Representative Sue Myrick (NC-09) and Senator Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) announced that Charlotte has received a Department of Homeland Security grant totaling $7,404,955. The grant money is derived from the Department of Homeland Security’s 2004 Budget for the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI).

"I am very pleased that Charlotte has been chosen to receive this grant money," said Myrick. "We are a terrorist target because we are America’s second largest financial city, and we are the only city in the country with two nuclear power plants within a 30 mile radius. This funding will allow us to better prepare for any terrorist acts against our region."

"I commend the City of Charlotte for securing this grant to further its protection and preparedness," said Dole. "It will put the people and resources where they are needed to protect America from a future terrorist threat. It is vitally important that we continue to take the measures necessary to make our homeland more secure."

These grants to urban areas within the United States are designed to help enhance their overall security and preparedness level to prevent, respond to and recover from acts of terrorism. These funds are being made available in addition to the nearly $800 million that the Department’s Office for Domestic Preparedness awarded during 2003 specifically for urban areas. The urban areas are chosen based on a formula that takes into account factors including critical infrastructure, population density and credible threat information.
