(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Sue Myrick today announced that a $4,358,750 US Department of Education grant has been awarded to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system was selected to receive the funding under the "Early Reading First Program." The funding, which will serve 600 children and 24 teachers, will be used from October 1, 2003 to September 30, 2006.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system has partnered with Smart Start of Mecklenburg County and Mecklenburg County’s Child Care Resources, Inc. to form the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Partnership’s Early Reading First Initiative. This partnership hopes to provide an environment rich in print and oral language, help children who are at risk for reading failure to make the transition from preschool to formal classroom instruction, and involve parents meaningfully in their children’s education.
