(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick today announced that two schools, Arlington Elementary School in Gastonia, NC, and Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC, will be presented with the prestigious No Child Left Behind- Blue Ribbon Schools Award. The award honors public and private K-12 schools that are either academically superior in their state or demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement. Only 215 Elementary and Secondary schools in the United States are being presented with the Blue Ribbon Award.
"I am very excited that Arlington Elementary School and Providence Day School are both being selected as Blue Ribbon Schools. This is a great honor and they should be very proud because only 215 schools nationwide are being recognized as outstanding schools," Myrick said.
Last year, US Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced that schools singled out for national honors would reflect the goals of our nation’s new education reforms for high standards and accountability. The Department of Education’s new program recognizes schools who meet one of two assessment criteria: It recognizes schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance in accordance with state assessment systems; and it rewards schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments.
