(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick (NC-9) today announced that Charlotte has received a grant from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) totaling $5,479,243. The grant comes from DHS’s Urban Area Security Initiative Allocations (UASI).
“This funding will help Charlotte better prepare for terrorist threats,” said Rep. Myrick. “It equips our first responders with the resources they need to continue to protect our citizens.”
The UASI provides additional resources to those areas with greater security needs by allocating funds based upon a formula that considers a number of factors. These factors include population and population density; critical infrastructure; threat information; formal mutual aid cooperation; and law enforcement investigations and enforcement activity.
The funding will be used for equipment, training, planning and exercises for first responders so that they can prevent, respond, or recover from acts of terrorism and other disasters. Charlotte is one of approximately 50 cities nationally to receive a UASI grant, and was the only city in North Carolina to receive the grant.
