Education

Every child, regardless of family income, should have access to a quality education. High standards, accountability for results, local control, and parental involvement are essential to ensure that every child succeeds in the classroom. While I support increasing our investment in education, I also believe we must get results from that investment. No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the comprehensive overhaul of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act, recognizes that money alone cannot guarantee every American child the chance to learn and succeed. NCLB provides reforms and resources to help states put a highly qualified teacher in every public classroom. It expands local control over federal education funds and provides new flexibility for every local school district in America.

In 2007 Congress passed H.R. 2272 the America COMPETES Act, a piece of legislation that I supported from it’s beginnings in the Science and Technology Committee. H.R. 2272 includes grants for higher education institutions or non-profit organizations for improving science/math instruction, grants for scientists and engineers at the early stage of their careers in higher education or research and grants for National Science Foundation programs aimed at educating people in science and math.

Our students are also our future leaders and we must strive to make sure they are able to get the most out of their education. Rest assured that I will continue to work to pass legislation that makes achieving a quality education not only possible but affordable.
