Congressman Frank Lucas named Blackwell High School student Jonathan Paige as the winner of his Congressional Art Contest today, earning him a spot for his work in the halls of Congress, as well as a trip for three to Washington.
Jonathan beat out all other entries from the Third Congressional District in this competition, with his pen-and-ink drawing entitled "Abe." Lucas hosted Jonathan and his family today at a reception in his Canadian County office.
"Jonathan clearly has a unique artistic gift, and I’m proud to have his artwork representing our Third Congressional District to the nation and the world," Lucas said. "His work is a great example of the tremendous talent of Oklahoma’s young people."
An Artistic Discovery is a nationwide congressional high school art competition sponsored by the Congressional Arts Caucus and initiated by Members of Congress. More than 300 congressional offices participate in the annual program.
Jonathan’s artwork will be displayed in the corridor tunnel leading to the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, along with winning entries from other congressional districts. They will be seen by thousands of people visiting the nation’s capital.
Along with the national recognition of his work, Jonathan will receive free airfare for three to participate in the Congressional Art Competition’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 28 in Washington, D.C. The airfare is provided by corporate sponsors of the competition.
Jonathan is a junior at Blackwell High School, his art teacher is Mrs. Stalcup-Smith. Jonathan is the son of Randy and Judy Paige of Nardin, Okla.
