Dingell Comments on Pelosi Decision on Assistance for Automakers

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following comments today regarding House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement on the need for Congress to craft legislation to provide emergency and limited financial assistance to the automobile industry under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act (EESA) and her desire for Congress to consider the legislation next week during a lame-duck session:

"This is a courageous and appropriate action by Speaker Pelosi. She has shown great compassion for our working families who rely on the auto industry. I am working with Senator Levin, Congressman Levin and the entire Michigan delegation on a bill that will help the auto industry during this period of transition. I look forward to more work with the Speaker, Chairman Frank – who will do a superb job -  and President-elect Obama, who deserves particular praise for stepping up for the auto workers both during the campaign and in the days since his victory. The President-elect is providing the leadership we need to get our economy on track.

"Borrowing the Speaker's words, I look forward to working towards our shared goal: helping the U.S. auto companies 're-emerge as a global, competitive leader in fuel efficiency and in new, path-breaking energy-efficient technologies that protect our environment.'"
