Saxton Condemns Terrorist Attacks in London

Chair of House terrorism subcommittee cites need for unified stand

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jim Saxton (NJ-3rd), Chairman of the House Terrorism, Unconventional Threats and Capabilities Subcommittee, condemned a series of terrorist attacks in London earlier today.

"This is a well-coordinated attack on innocent civilians," said Saxton. "Whether it's in Europe, the Middle East, the United States or elsewhere, all civilized nations are threatened by terrorism. Acts of murder and maiming of innocent people are the tools terrorists use to accomplish their radical brand of Islam. We must respond by staying committed to the global war on terrorism with our allies and friends."

In 2004, Saxton met with United Kingdom officials to exchange counter terrorism strategies and tactics with the House of Commons Defense Committee Chairman Bruce George, and the U.K. Secretary of Defense, Geoffrey Hoon.

"This is the nation that was unbreakable through two world wars, and years of IRA bombing attacks," Saxton said. "The terrorists are mistaken if they think they can shake the will of the U.K. The British are a tough people, and I think this attack will strengthen their resolve."

A vocal advocate of anti-terrorism awareness in Congress for 15 years, Saxton was selected by House Speaker Dennis Hastert in 2000 to chair the Special Oversight Panel on Terrorism. In 2002 he was named as chairman of the Subcommittee, which is part of the House Armed Services Committee.
