Rep. Saxton Briefed on U.S. Mission
at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
Force Protection, Detainee Disposition Are Key Issues

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jim Saxton today was briefed by federal officials from the U.S. Department of Defense regarding the status of the U.S. military mission in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"My top concern is for the safety of the American troops challenged with the dangerous mission of guarding these detainees at Camp X-ray," said Saxton. "The detainees are proven to be extremely dangerous and our force protection is a paramount concern for me."

Saxton, chairman of the House Special Oversight Panel on Terrorism, held the classified hearing with other members of the committee in the Rayburn House Office Building. He was appointed to the chairmanship by House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Armed Services Chairman Bob Stump.

Three witnesses gave testimony on the system guarding Taliban forces and al Qaeda terrorists, including their mental state.

"The testimony concerned the psychological and cultural mind set of the detainees," Saxton said. "It also laid out the training regimen that U.S. forces receive before taking up the mission of handling these detainees."
