The amount of raw destruction and loss of
life was numbing. I could find no words to describe the
dusty, smoldering scene before me. I had been angry at
the murderers. But to stand before the carnage broke my
heart-- for the thousands of dead, the grieving families,
the heroes lost. When I later toured the Pentagon, I realized
the enemy had targeted our military stronghold, as well
as our economic stronghold. They were out to destroy us
within our own country. When I returned to McGuire Air
Force Base and Fort Dix in New Jersey, I understood we
would be sending our troops into harm's way, once again,
to defend liberty and justice and the American way of life.
- Jim Saxton, after examining the scenes of the Sept.
11, 2001 attacks. |
