WASHINGTON, D.C - U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi (AZ-1) announced today that the Groom Creek Fire District has been awarded a federal grant of $88,064 to update essential equipment that has fallen into disrepair.
The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. The Groom Creek Fire District will use the funds to replace out-of-compliance Turnouts and Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA). According to Groom Creek Fire Chief Todd Bentley, Turnouts are the fire resistant gear that firefighters wear when battling fires, consisting of a coat, pants, leather or rubber waterproof boots, a hood, helmet with eye protection and gloves. SCBAs are devices worn by firefighters to provide breathable air in a hostile environment.
“I am extremely pleased about this DHS funding,” said Congressman Renzi. “It is important that our first-responders have the best gear available to them. Federal grants like this allow our firefighters to purchase the equipment necessary to keep our communities safe.”
This grant is a part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to strengthen the Nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire related hazards.
