Defense
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I make the defense of our country and the support of our women and men in the military a top priority.
Economy & Jobs
As your representative, I work every day to support our local economy and help Northwest Washington businesses thrive and create family-wage jobs. I am working to invest in small and medium-sized businesses so they can succeed in global economy, secure transportation investments to will keep our economy moving, keep electricity rates reliable and affordable and support our community colleges as they train workers for highly-skilled jobs in our region.
Energy & Gas Prices
The skyrocketing cost of gas is hurting families in Northwest Washington. High fuel costs are making it more difficult for families to pay the bills, for community groups to feed the hungry and for local businesses to thrive and create jobs.
Health Care
Medicare is a cornerstone of our health care system: it takes care of our seniors, supports our doctors and hospitals, and even affects the care given to our servicemembers. One of my priorities in Congress is to strengthen Medicare and ensure that it can continue to take care of Americans for years to come.
Homeland Security
I am working in Congress to help our country fight terrorists, secure our borders, increase port security and make sure local law enforcement has the tools they need to keep our communities safe.
Iraq
In October 2002, I voted against the Iraq war resolution, believing that the Administration was mistakenly taking a "go it alone" approach. More than four years later, Americans in the 2nd Congressional District and across the country are increasingly frustrated with the war in Iraq. I share their concern about our current course.
Meth

Methamphetamine abuse hurts families, schools, businesses and communities in Northwest Washington and across the country. Once considered a West Coast drug, methamphetamine use has spread East in the past several years and now affects communities nationwide. As co-chair of the Congressional Caucus to Fight and Control Methamphetamine, I work to provide local law enforcement, treatment professionals, and prevention experts with the tools they need to combat meth.

Transportation
Sound investments in transportation keep our economy moving. Every $1 billion we spend on highways and road projects creates 47,000 jobs in our community. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I was able to secure over $52 million dollars in transportation projects for the Second Congressional District in the Federal Surface Transportation Reauthorization Bill, also known as SAFETEA-LU. These projects will relieve congestion, improve safety and spur economic growth in our communities.
Veterans
The Second Congressional District is home to over 75,000 veterans including many veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of my most important responsibilities as a member of Congress is to ensure that the men and women who served our country get the resources and health care they need and deserve.
