Getting Around Town

Arlington National Cemetery

  • Location: Across the Potomac in Arlington, VA.
  • Nearest Metro Station: Arlington Cemetery.
  • Hours: Opens at 8AM daily (365 days a year); Closes at 7PM during April-August; Closes at 5PM during September-March.
  • Details: Paid parking is available on Memorial Drive for $1.25/hour for the first three hours and $2/hour thereafter.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (The Mint)

  • Location: 14th and C Streets, SW, Washington, DC.
  • Nearest Metro Station: Smithsonian.
  • Hours: Visitors’ Center hours are 9AM-3:30PM. Visitors’ Center summer hours (in effect May-August) are 8:30AM-8PM.
  • Details/Tours: Tour hours are 9AM-2PM. Summer Tour hours (in effect May-August) are 9AM-1:45PM and every fifteen minutes between 5PM-7PM. Tour visitors must present a valid photo ID at the Visitors’ Center entrance on 14th and C Streets, SW. There are no tours offered on evenings and weekends.

U.S. Capitol Building

  • Location: On Capitol Hill, Washington, DC.
  • Nearest Metro Stations: Capitol South; Union Station.
  • Hours/Details/Tours: Tours are available Monday through Saturday, 9AM-4:30PM. Tickets are required. Free tickets are available at the Capitol Guide Service kiosk along the curving sidewalk southwest of the Capital (near the corner of 1st Street, SW and Independence Ave.). Ticket distribution begins at 8:15AM.

National Cathedral

  • Location: Massachusetts Ave., NW, and Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC.
  • Nearest Metro Stations: Tenleytown; Woodley Park.
  • Hours: Regular Hours are Sunday 8AM-5:30PM, Monday through Friday 10AM-5:30PM, and Saturday 10AM-4:30PM. Summer hours, in effect from May 1 until Labor Day, are 8AM-9PM.
  • Tours: Tours are available on Sunday 12:45-2:30PM, Monday through Friday 10-11:30AM and 12:45-3:15PM, and Saturday 10-11AM and 12:45-3:15PM. A variety of tours are available, including a “Behind-the-Scenes” Tour, a Garden Tour, and a Gargoyle Tour.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

  • Hours/Details/Tours: Tours are offered Monday through Friday, 8:45AM-2:30PM. Tour participants should arrive at the 9th and E Street entrance 15 minutes prior to the tour start time for processing. Tickets are required and should be reserved at least three months prior to a visit by calling the Congressman’s office.

Ford's Theatre

  • Location: 511 10th Street, NW, Washington, DC.
  • Nearest Metro Stations: Metro Center; Gallery Place/Chinatown; Archives/Navy Memorial.
  • Hours: Normally 9AM-5PM.
  • Details/Tours: The Theatre may be closed at times for matinees or rehearsals. Tours are self-guided. Talks covering the history of the Theatre and the Lincoln assassination are given daily at 15 minutes past each hour from 9:15AM-4:15PM.

U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum

  • Location: 100 Raoul Wellenberg Place, just south of Independence Ave. and 14th St., SE, Washington, DC.
  • Nearest Metro Station: Smithsonian.
  • Hours: Open 10AM-5:30PM every day. Extended summer hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 1-June 12, are 10AM-8PM. Closed on Yom Kippur and Christmas Day.
  • Details/Tours: Timed daily-use free passes are required to visit the Permanent Exhibition (“The Holocaust”) and can be obtained at the Museum beginning daily at 10AM, or by calling/visiting http://www.tickets.com at 1-800-400-9373.

Jefferson Memorial

Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts

  • Location: New Hampshire Ave., NW, and Rock Creek Parkway, Washington, DC.

  • Hours/Details/Tours: Tours are available on Monday-Friday at 10AM-5PM and on Saturday-Sunday at 10AM-1PM. Tours depart from the Level A Parking Plaza.

Library of Congress

  • Location: The Visitors’ Center is in the Thomas Jefferson Building at the corner of 1st St. and Independence Ave., SE, Washington, DC.
  • Hours: The Visitors’ Center is open Monday through Saturday, 10AM-5:30PM. The Visitors’ Theater is open Monday through Saturday, 10AM-5:15PM.
  • Details/Tours: No reservations are required for tours. Tours are offered Monday through Friday on every half hour from 10:30AM-3:30PM, and Saturday on every half hour from 10:30AM-2:30PM. Tours originate in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building. Professional programs, group tours, and audio tours are also offered.

Lincoln Memorial

  • Location: On the west end of the Mall at 23rd St., NW, Washington, DC.

George Washington's Mount Vernon

  • Location: 8 miles south of Alexandria, VA, (about 15 miles south of Washington, DC) at the end of the George Washington Parkway.
  • Nearest Metro Station: none
  • Hours: Open 365 days a year. Open 8AM-5PM during April-August; 9AM-5PM during March, September, and October; 9AM-4PM during November-February. Grounds are cleared one half-hour prior to closing.
  • Details/Tours: General Admission Fees are $11 for adults, $10:50 for seniors age 62 and above, $5 for children age 6-11, and free for children 5 and under. Group tours are offered by reservation. An Expert Guide Service is also offered for an additional $5 per person.

National Archives

  • Location: 9th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.
  • Nearest Metro Station: Archives/Navy Memorial
  • Hours: Open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Details/Tours: The Rotunda is open for self-guided walk through No guided tours are available. The Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence are on display in the Rotunda.

The Pentagon

  • Location: Across the 14th Street Bridge in Arlington, VA.

  • Details/Tours: Tours have been available to schools, educational organizations and other select groups by reservation only before September 2001. Contact their Tour Office.

  • Hours: Most Smithsonian museums are open daily (except Christmas Day), 10AM-5:30PM.
  • Details: The Smithsonian Information Center is located in the Castle, which is on the south side of the Mall between 9th and 10th Streets, just north of Independence Ave. The Information Center is open 9AM-5:30PM.

U.S. Supreme Court

  • Location: One 1st St., NE, Washington, DC (across 1st St. from the US Capital and across E. Capital St. from the Library of Congress).
  • Nearest Metro Stations: Capital South; Union Station.
  • Hours: Monday-Friday 9AM-4:30PM.
  • Tours/Details: Lectures are available every hour on the half hour, 9:30AM-3:30PM, on days when the Court is not in session.

The White House

  • Location: 16th St. and Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC.

  • Hours: The Visitors’ Center is open 7:30AM-4PM, seven days a week.
  • Details/Tours: Due to White House policy, a very limited number of tours are available for groups of 10 or more. These must be requested through our office at least six weeks in advance. For general White House visitor information please use the number listed below.

Smithsonian National Zoo

  • Location: 3001 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, DC.
  • Nearest Metro Stations: Woodley Park; Cleveland Park.
  • Hours: From May 1-Sept. 15, the grounds are open 6AM-8PM and the buildings are open 10AM-6PM. From Sept. 16-April 30, the grounds are open 6AM-6PM and the buildings are open 10AM-4:30PM. The National Zoo is open daily (except Christmas Day).
