NATO Parliamentary Assembly Meetings Held in Spain

This week 250 delegates from the 26 Member and 19 Associate countries met in Valencia, Spain. Our delegation heard from the NATO Secretary General and President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly as well as President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia and General John Craddock, Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

I am privileged to be a U.S. delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. I firmly believe that NATO, as a group of democratic nations, has been will continue to be vital in our nation's foreign policy.

After the NATO meetings, the U.S. delegation traveled to Italy to meet with Italian NATO delegates, as well as the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff and Minister of Defense. One of the stops in Italy was in Nettuno at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, where 7,861 World War II soldiers are laid to rest. Our delegation is pictured above in front of the "Brothers in Arms" sculpture on the cemetery grounds. Soldiers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and seven other nations, including one pair of brothers, are buried in this sacred ground.

Young Entrepreneurs Wanted

An idea that started in the United Kingdom has expanded into the first-ever Global Entrepreneurship Week, Nov. 17-23. More than 75 countries will be hosting events and activities for young people with the goal to inspire enterprising ideas to make a profit and address some of society's biggest issues.

During the week, partner organizations will conduct a range of activities -- from simple speeches to comprehensive competitions -- designed to inspire, connect, inform, mentor and engage the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Host organizations in each participating country are recruiting partners and coordinating related activities. The exact type of activities, whether online or face-to-face, is limited only by the imaginations of the partners and the participants. Suggested activities include invention competitions, entrepreneurship film festivals, networking events, school-based activities, and local entrepreneurship summits.

Journalism Internship Program

As the field of journalism changes, real work experience and a diverse set of skills are now crucial to a successful career. The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) Journalism Internship program offers hands-on paid broadcast and print journalism placements for the summer, spring, and fall to immerse apsiring journalists in the field.

Filling out an application gives you the opportunity to apply for placements at print newspapers and major media networks. All internships are paid and provide career training and mentoring. The program is not limited to journalism majors; students from all disciplines, including political science and economics are encouraged to apply.

Interns spend eight weeks at a major media outlet gaining experience in broadcast journalism or a daily newspaper building a portfolio of 20-40 or more clips. In addition to receiving a stipend and housing allowance, interns also participate in a free, week-long career building workshop during the summer.

The application deadline is December 1. For more information, and to apply, click here.

The Great American Smokeout: Information from the American Cancer Society

Every year, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout by smoking less or quitting for the day on the third Thursday of November (November 20). The event challenges people to stop using tobacco and raises awareness of the many effective ways to quit for good.

Research shows smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have some means of support, such as nicotine replacement products, counseling, prescription medicine to lessen cravings, guide books, and the encouragement of friends and family members.

Nevertheless, only about 1 in 7 current smokers reports having tried any of the recommended therapies during his or her last quit attempt. Telephone quitlines are a convenient new resource, available for free in many states.

Call 1-800-ACS-2345 to find a quitline or other science-based support in your area and visit the American Cancer Society website for more information.

Visiting the Capitol

The new Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) officially opens its doors on December 2, 2009. This new addition to the Capitol Complex will provide visitors with an interactive and educational look at the history and purpose of the US Capitol.

With the opening of the CVC, visitors to the Capitol can now schedule their own tours on-line. But as always, constituents are also welcome to contact my office to schedule tours of the Capitol, White House, Supreme Court and various other Washington, DC landmarks.

Our Nation's Capital is a beautiful, world-class city with a rich history. If you are considering a visit to Washington, I encourage you to contact my office for information about how to get the most out of your trip.
