CONGRESSMAN HALL ON THE ISSUES
Education
As the Ranking Member of the Science Committee, I am particularly concerned that our nation remains a world leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. I am a supporter of President Bush’s Competitiveness Initiative, and I have worked with my colleagues in Congress to pass several pieces of legislation to improve U.S. STEM education at all levels – K-12, undergraduate, and graduate. These measures create programs to attract math and science majors to teaching, improve undergraduate courses, expand interdisciplinary graduate work, and create a Presidential Innovation Award to be given to individuals who develop one or more unique scientific or engineering ideas in the national interest. I believe it is important that we continue our efforts in STEM education to ensure that the next generation of high-tech industries and products are developed by researchers in the U.S.
