Health Care

Our nation is currently facing health care crises on many fronts and I have made addressing these problems my number one priority as a Member of Congress and a Member of the Health Subcommittee. I was proud that two of the very first accomplishments of the 110th Congress were passing legislation to require price negotiations for prescription drugs through Medicare and federally funding stem cell research. However, there still remains much to be done.

There are nearly 47 million Americans who are uninsured. In my opinion, that is 47 million too many. More disturbingly, nine million of those individuals are children. I am proud that the first topic we are addressing in the Health Subcommittee is the reauthorization of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which is known as Healthy Families in California. By fully funding and improving the delivery of services through SCHIP, we can ensure that kids in working families do not go without proper access to health care. I also support efforts to expand Medicare coverage to people who are under 65 and to encourage state and local initiatives to achieve universal health coverage of all Americans.
