Investigating Market Manipulation – Voted for the H.R. 1252, the Energy Price Gouging Prevention Act. Provides the Federal Trade Commission the authority to investigate and punish those who artificially inflate the price of energy. President Bush has threatened to veto this bill.  

Protecting America from Cartels – Voted for H.R.6074, the Gas Price Relief for Consumers Act. Authorizes lawsuits against oil cartel members for oil price fixing. Creates an Antitrust Task Force to crack down on oil companies engaged in anticompetitive behavior or market manipulation. President Bush has threatened to veto this legislation.  

Getting Oil on the Market – Voted for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Fill Suspension and Consumer Protection Act. Suspends the filling of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, beginning June 30th, to put more oil on the market. This legislation was signed into law on May 19, 2008 [P.L. 110-232].  

Increasing Domestic Supply – Voted for H.R.6251, “Use It or Lose It.” Forces oil companies to use or lose existing leases on the 68 million acres of public land not being produced. Failed to garner the 2/3 majority vote needed to pass the House. 

Raising Fuel Economy Standards – Voted for the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Raises fuel efficiency to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. This legislation was signed into law on December 19, 2007 [P.L. 110-140]. 

Creating Jobs – Major investments in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors could create between 3 million and 10 million new quality jobs. The Green Jobs Act, legislation I authored to authorize $125 million per year to train workers in these sectors, was signed into law as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act [P.L.110-140]. 

Securing a Clean Energy Future – Voted for H.R. 6049, the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act. Extends and expands tax incentives for renewable energy. President Bush has threatened to veto this legislation. Voted to support the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 which provides the Commodity Futures Trading Commission authority to prevent manipulation of energy prices. I voted to override the President’s veto and this legislation became law [P.L. No: 110-246].   

Reducing Public Transit Fares and Expanding Transit Services – Voted for H.R. 6052, the Saving Energy Through Public Transportation Act. Provides grants to mass transit authorities to reduce public transit fares. Funds transit expansion and escalating operating costs.
