The Federal Budget

The federal budget is more than just a list of programs and how much we spend on each one. It is fundamentally a statement of our nation’s values and a recognition of our society’s priorities.

I have worked hard to put together fiscally responsible budgets that meet the challenges facing our country. This has been extremely difficult to do during a time when the huge budget surpluses of the late 1990’s have been turned into the largest annual budget deficits in our country’s history.

This turnaround in our fiscal picture has been brought on by a number of factors, but especially the irresponsible tax cutting agenda of the Bush Administration. The resulting deficits have led to cuts in a variety of programs critically important to tens of millions of Americans – including veterans' health, student loans, homeland security, medical research, and environmental protection. Perhaps most tragically, these deficits will just be passed on to our children and grandchildren to pay.

I believe the last few years of reckless fiscal policy have hurt our country. The new majority in Congress has a tough job bringing our budget back to balance while making the critical investments important to Americans, but we are committed to achieving these goals.
