Committee on Homeland Security

Homeland Security Committee

In the aftermath of the tragedy of 9/11 our nation awakened to the importance of national security and defending our homeland. In the 110th Congress, I have the honor to serve as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security which is charged with working to better secure our nation from threats and to take steps to ensure the safety of all Americans. Within the full committee, I work on two important subcommittees. I am proud to be a part of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism, which focuses on defending our nation's borders and ports and protecting Americans from the threats of illegal trafficking and smuggling. I also serve on the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, Science and Technology, whose focus it is to defend Americans against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, enhance our cybersecurity, and mitigate any emerging threats.

I am grateful to have this opportunity to represent the City of Houston, which ranks as the fourth largest city in the United States and includes the diverse 25-mile-long complex of the Port of Houston, the Texas Medical Center, and has often been hailed as the nation's energy capitol. For our great city to remain safe we must all work together. Homeland Security starts at home. As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security I will work with all Houstonians-- citizens, community leaders, elected officials and first responders-- to ensure that our community has adequate funding and the best available resources to prevent against, prepare for, and respond to any and all threats. Working together we can ensure that our borders and ports are protected and that our nation is safer and stronger for generations to come.
