Nydia Velázquez to chair congressional Hispanics group

WASHINGTON — New York City congresswoman Nydia Velázquez has been chosen to lead the 21-member Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Velázquez already chairs the House Small Business Committee.
She also is considered a possible choice to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Senate should Clinton be nominated to become Secretary of State.
Velázquez said she was honored to lead the Hispanic lawmakers group at a time of "rapid growth, increasing purchasing power and political influence" for the nation's 47 million Latinos.
When she was first elected in 1992, she became the first Puerto Rican woman in Congress.
Her district now includes parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
