Kentucky's Second District

The Second Congressional District is often referred to as the "Heartland of Kentucky"--and for good reason. Historical records show settlers arriving in the area as early as the 1770s. In fact, Bardstown, located in the eastern part of the District, is the second oldest city in the state and is home to the Federal Hill Mansion, known more affectionately as "My Old Kentucky Home." It is this stately home that motivated Stephen Foster to pen the words to the stirring tune that eventually became the state's official song.

From the rolling hills of bluegrass in the east, to the caves in the south, to the river country of the west, to the metropolitan area in the north, the Second District is home to over 615,000 residents. It encompasses a total of 21 counties, many of them rural. Farming is a way of life in this District, with small tobacco farms being seen from almost any roadway. It is also home to such notable sites as the birthplace of one of America's greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln; Fort Knox, home of the nation's armored cavalry and gold depository; Mammoth Cave, one of the modern wonders of the world; and home to some of the oldest bourbon distilleries in the nation. The Second District is indeed the Heartland of Kentucky and a great place to call home!
