The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
The EITC is a refundable tax credit for low-income workers. In the 2005 tax year, more than 22.2 million people nationwide received EITC. Yet 20 to 25 percent of the people who are eligible either don’t know it exists, or if they qualify. Further, many who are aware of the program do not know how to claim it. That means millions of people nationwide do not get the credit that the law provides.
For the 2008 tax year, the maximum credit is $4,716 for a family with two or more children; $2,853 for a family with one child, and $438 for those who do not have children. Find out if you are one the 309,000 Wisconsin individuals or families that qualify for the EITC.
