It was named in honor of Return Jonathan Meigs, an American Revolutionary officer, Tennessee pioneer, and longtime Indian agent. The county was a stop along the Trail of Tears which is an important and tragic part of our nation's history. Hiwasee Island was home to many Cherokees during this time and later Sam Houston, a two term Member of Congress and former Governor of the State of Tennessee. Houston left the area to support Texas in its fight for independence and later became the president of the Republic of Texas.
