Congressman Peterson is a member of the following committees in the House:

Appropriations Committee

The House Appropriations Committee, along with its counterpart in the Senate, are responsible for writing each of the 13 Appropriations bills that must be passed by Congress and signed by the president each year to fund government operations. Congress's role in appropriating funds is a Constitutional responsiblity, which states that "no money shall be drawn from the Treasury but in consequence of appropriations made by law." Traditionally, almost all federal government spending was determined by the appropriations bills. Today, the committee is responsible for approximately 40% of federal spending; programs such as Medicare and Social Security, which have their funding levels made manditory by law, make up the rest. The full committee has 65 Members and is divided into 13 different subcommittees with each committee responsible for one of the 13 Appropriations bills.
