U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee secured collective-bargaining and dispute-settlement rights for the nation’s civilian Defense Department workers, including 10,000 at Naval Base Kitsap and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Rights of civilian defense workers restored

Thanks to U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, Walter B. Jones and Chris Van Hollen, the Pentagon will have to gut a new personnel system that a judge has said violates the rights of over 700,000 civilian Defense Department workers, including 16,000 in the Puget Sound area.

Protecting the Covert Identity of Intelligence Officers

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee joined other Members of Congress today at an oversight hearing on the national security consequences of disclosing the identity of a covert intelligence officer. The Members heard from a panel of witnesses that included former intelligence officers with the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency. Inslee and others want to find out whether White House officials breached national security by disclosing the identity of a covert CIA officer.

Good News for Washington's Bases

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee announced today that he was encouraged by the Department of Defense (DOD) decision to keep open crucial military facilities in Washington State during DOD’s base closure recommendations. Under the DOD realignment and closure proposal issued today, Washington State would actually gain positions from other areas of the country, including 1,401 positions at Naval Station Bremerton.

Increasing Military Benefits and Humanitarian Relief

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee voted in favor of a House emergency spending bill (H.R. 1268) that will increase funding for the safety and benefits of American troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The legislation gained bipartisan support because it met many of the demands of critics of the Iraq war and post-war planning to improve troop security and pay, congressional accountability and worldwide humanitarian efforts. Inslee has cosponsored legislation to improve safety for American troops in Iraq and today’s bill itemizes specific increases in military death gratuity benefits, troop and vehicle armor, and pay for service members. The bill also forces the Administration to provide Congress with a plan on post-war Iraq before receiving military-construction funding.

Briefing on DOD Civilian Worker Regulations

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee held a briefing today with civilian defense employee representatives to discuss the Department of Defense’s proposed changes to National Security Personnel System (NSPS) regulations. Inslee, other Members of Congress and congressional staff heard concerns about how the new rules, published on Monday and subject to a thirty day comment period, would affect the more than 750,000 federal defense workers in the country.

Fighting for Civilian Defense Workers' Rights

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee is calling for civilian defense workers to be included in the Department of Defense’s formation of plans for a new National Security Personnel System (NSPS), and has gathered signatures from over one hundred twenty-five members of Congress on a bipartisan letter demanding that Defense Secretary Rumsfield provide written details about the proposed NSPS to the civilian workers.

Cracking Down on Terrorist Financing

During today’s consideration of intelligence reform legislation in the House Financial Services Committee, the Committee passed an amendment offered by U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (WA-01) to combat terrorist financing. Inslee’s amendment, which passed by a voice vote, would help to prevent terrorists from using Internet gambling mechanisms to launder or transfer their funds.

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (WA-01) offered an amendment today to a defense appropriations bill (H.R. 4613) to prevent the Department of Defense (DOD) from weakening civilian defense personnel protections. The amendment was turned down on a mostly party line vote, 202 to 218.

Norm Dicks (WA-06), from Navy Admiral Charles Young regarding the reported incident involving a damaged nuclear missile at Naval Submarine Base Bangor. Said Inslee, “Congressman Dicks and I received a very detailed briefing today giving us the exact details regarding the incident that occurred on November 7 at Bangor."

Reservist Equipment Shortages in Iraq

In the wake of reported equipment shortages among National Guard and Reserve units in Iraq, and increasing fatalities there, U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee cosponsored a congressional resolution (H.Con.Res. 335) urging Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld to address these shortages, and ensure that reserve components are provided with the same equipment as the regular component.

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee voted against an amendment to extend the baggage screening deadline tonight in the House of Representatives. "We need greater passenger safety, not more extensions and excuses. Boeing is optimistic that the original screening deadline can be met, and I have faith that the creativity and diligence of the American people can make this happen," said Inslee.

Local Veterans Receive Bronze Star

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee awarded the Bronze Star Medal to several local World War II Army veterans and their families at an award ceremony in the Edmonds Historical Museum. Veterans from Bothell, Kenmore, Kirkland, Redmond, and Seattle received the medal.

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee's Baggage Screening amendment, requiring that 100% of checked baggage be screened, was incorporated into the Republican Airport Security bill (HR 3150).House Republicans asked Inslee for use of his language in their bill, and Inslee agreed.The House of Representatives passed HR 3150 last night by a vote of 286-139, including Inslee's vote for passage.

The family of Mark Clotfelter, who was killed in action thirty-one years ago in Vietnam, finally received the Gold Star medal this Memorial Day. I delivered the medal to the sister of Mark Clotfelter, Susan Clotfelter Blaker, at her home in Poulsbo.
