Jay Inslee will participate in a briefing this Tuesday morning on the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami warning systems at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle. Inslee will hear from renowned tsunami expert Dr. Eddie Bernard and other NOAA scientists as they discuss how a global tsunami warning and detection system might have changed or improved the tsunami warnings for Southeast Asia following Monday’s earthquake. When Congress returns to session next week, Inslee will be introducing legislation with House Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) to improve the United States and global tsunami detection and warning system. |

Jay Inslee expressed support for today's announcement by the Bush administration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) that they will expand the current Pacific Tsunami Warning System, and build a new tsunami warning system for the Atlantic coast of the United States and the Caribbean. Inslee also will introduce legislation that will deploy between forty and fifty high-tech ocean-based sensors in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as coordinate and forecast international warnings about tsunamis. |

Jay Inslee called a meeting with scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Kirkland-based Paroscientific to discuss NOAA's use of deep ocean buoys in detecting and warning about tsunamis. The meeting at NOAA's Sand Point facility included a demonstration of NOAA's full sized deep ocean buoys, as well as NOAA computer simulations of tsunamis. The NOAA buoys are equipped with pressure transducers made by Paroscientific that are precise enough to detect a tsunami as small as two centimeters in height. |

Inslee and Larsen received a classified briefing from the U.S. Coast Guard, as well as a non-classified briefing from top officials with the Washington State Ferries and the Washington State Patrol, on new ferry security measures that were instituted in October 2004. Inslee still believes that when implementing new safety measures, our new policies should take into account Washington state’s unique ferry system. Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is an integral part of combating crime and improving the quality of life by placing police officers on the streets and in the community. Community policing stresses the prevention of crime before it occurs. Inslee lobbied the House Appropriations Committee to increase funding for the hiring component of the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program in FY2005 appropriation, and Snohomish and Kitsap Counties received a total of $1,609,216 for Fiscal Year 2005. U.S. Rep. Inslee is also worked hard to make Kitsap County a part of the Northwest High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) to stop the flow of drugs and drug-related crimes into the country. HIDTA, part of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, works to reduce drug trafficking in the most critical areas of the country by providing a coordination umbrella for local, state, and federal law enforcement efforts. |

Friends of Youth operates a treatment center, the Griffin Home, in Renton, WA, for severely troubled adolescent boys with a history of juvenile offenses or aggressive sexual behavior. |
