Korean American Day recognized nationally

The House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill recognizing January 13 as Korean American Day. Its observance falls on the day that the first Korean immigrants landed in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1903.

Touring Local Business

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee visited Lynnwood-based Crane Aerospace & Electronics. The visit included a presentation of the company's new AirWeighs Real-Time Weight and Balance System for Aircraft, a tour of the factory where the Weight and Balance System will be manufactured, and a discussion with Crane employees and executives. Crane Aerospace & Electronics employs about nine hundred people in Washington state, including over six hundred people at its Lynnwood facility. Last year, Inslee helped secure $2 million in federal appropriations for an AirWeighs C-130 system.

Schiavo Legislation

Today U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee issued a statement in reaction to the decision by House and Senate Republican leaders to recall Members of Congress from their Constituent District Work Periods to Washington, D.C. to vote on legislation that would intervene in the case of Terri Schiavo. The House bill, expected to be taken up in an extraordinarily rare session on Palm Sunday and voted upon shortly after midnight, would allow the federal U.S. District Court in Florida to review the Schiavo case without considering the Florida State Court decisions.

Inslee Appointed to Commerce Committee

This afternoon, the House Democratic Steering Committee appointed U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee to the powerful Committee on Energy and Commerce in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 109th Congress. Members of Congress from Washington State, including U.S. Reps. Norm Dicks, Adam Smith, Jim McDermott, Brian Baird and Rick Larsen, supported Inslee's appointment to the Committee. Inslee will serve as the lone Democrat from the Pacific Northwest on the panel that oversees issues vital to Washington State's energy, technology and health care interests.

"Washington State has finally received a much-needed voice in Congress on the Energy and Commerce Committee, and I look forward to vigorously representing the needs of our state," said Inslee. "This appointment is an important opportunity to protect the Northwest's unique energy situation with the Bonneville Power Administration, advance renewable energy programs and ensure the federal government's commitment to cleaning up Hanford."

"I will use my seat on the Committee to promote policies that enhance innovation and growth in our region's hi-tech and biotech sectors. I am also committed to advancing our state's position with State Children's Health Insurance Program funding, and Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements."

Securing Local Projects in Spending Bill

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (WA-01) secured several local projects in the Omnibus Appropriations legislation that Congress passed today. This Saturday vote represents a brokering of the differences between the House of Representatives’ Omnibus bill and the Senate Omnibus bill, and will head next to the President’s desk for his signature.

Some of the following local projects made the final cut and are included in the bill:

  • UW Bothell – Cascadia Community College South Access;
  • Shoreline Interurban Trail;
  • Edmonds Center for the Arts;
  • Snohomish County Sheriff-COPS Tech Program;
  • Kitsap County Sheriff-COPS Integrated Biometric Identity System Equipment;
  • Lake Washington Technical College;
  • Puget Sound and Tributary Waters Operation and Maintenance;
  • Puget Sound Nearshore Marine Habitat Restoration Study;
  • Shoreline Community Colleg and the Naval Undersea Museum Science Education Alliance.

Funding for Edmonds Center for the Arts

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee and Senator Patty Murray announced today that Congress has included crucial funding for the Edmonds Center for the Arts in spending bills currently moving through Congress. Inslee successfully included $75,000 for the Edmonds Center for the Arts in the House VA/HUD Appropriations Bill (H.R. 5041), which has been reported out of Appropriations Committee and is awaiting a vote in the House.

Helping Small Businesses

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee met today with several local small business owners to learn more about how the inadequate federal funding to the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is hurting the businesses. The MEP is a program run through the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology. It works directly with local manufacturers to provide expertise on information technology applications, worker training, and process improvements, and helps the local companies improve productivity and increase profits.

U.S. Reps. Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Christopher Shays (R-CT) last Friday introduced the Congressional Research Accessibility Act, a bill to make Congressional Research Service products available to the public. The Congressional Research Service, a department of the Library of Congress, is a nonpartisan, analytical, research, and reference service for Congress and Congressional staff. This bill requires the Director of the Congressional Research Service to make its research - except confidential reports or those created at the request of an individual, office or committee - accessible to the public by a centralized, searchable electronic database.

Letter to Ashcroft Re: Special Counsel

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) sent a letter this morning to Attorney General John Ashcroft, urging Ashcroft to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate allegations that White House officials leaked the name of an undercover Central Intelligence Agency agent to reporters. The agent is the wife of U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, Joseph Wilson.
